SYMMES INN (1831) 1 Front Street, today Symmes Inn Museum
Charles Symmes built this stone inn, overlooking Lake Deschênes, to serve steamboat passengers from Montreal, arriving by horse and carriage from the Hull Wharf, and stopping overnight in Aylmer, before travelling further upriver to Quyon and to Fitzroy Harbour. There were no highways; before the railway and the automobile, the Ottawa River was the only transportation route.
After the railroad came through Aylmer, the steamboat service declined and the Symmes Inn was turned into apartments. Between the two world-wars, in the 1920s and 1930s, it was used by the Aylmer Aquatic Club – which provided a popular venue for dancing. The building gradually fell into disrepair and was abandoned. As a result of public pressure, in 1973 the Symmes Inn site was designated as an historic monument. In 1979, with funding from the provincial and federal governments, the Symmes Inn was carefully restored to its original state, using the famous 1839 illustration by W.H.Bartlett to ensure the appropriate architectural details.
This elegant building with its broad verandahs, front and back, its roof of hand cut cedar shingles with dormer windows and large double chimneys at each end provides a good example of the Quebec building style in the 19th century.
