THE HULL TOWNSHIP METHODIST CHAPEL (1827) today, Aylmer Heritage Association -Archive & Heritage Resource Centre.
Hull Township Methodist Chapel was built in 1827 by local settlers and served their congregation until 1852 when, to meet their needs, they built a larger church on Aylmer’s Main Street, which eventually became Aylmer United Church. It is the oldest stone building in the Ville de Gatineau.
The old chapel was converted to a house in the 1860s and remained a residence until the property was expropriated in 1975 to make way for the proposed Deschênes autoroute. The last residents to live in the house were the family of Rodrigue Farley, who bought the property in 1955. The city acquired the building, making it available for cultural purposes until they moved it in1989 to its present location a half a mile east to accommodate development. The Ville d'Aylmer granted its use for two years, to Richcraft, builders of the La Croisée neighbourhood, as their sales office, during which time the staircase and second floor were demolished. In 1992 it became the administrative office of APICA, who also operated a tourist information bureau during the summer months until 1997.
Aylmer Heritage Association moved into the building in April 2000 and, in 2004, they were successful in obtaining a federal government grant that enabled them to work with the City of Gatineau to reinstate the staircase and second floor to operate the Association’s Archive & Heritage Resource Centre. The city has granted a rent-free long-term lease to Aylmer Heritage Association to make their heritage exhibits and resources available to the general public.
